Synaptic adhesion molecules

چکیده
Synopsis The chemical synapse is a specialized asymmetric adhesion site between the axon of a neuron and its target cell. Synapse formation is a multi-step process involving target recognition followed by reciprocal inductive interactions that result in recruitment of proteins, such as receptors, and organelles, such as synaptic vesicles, to both the presynaptic and postsynaptic compartments. Synaptic cell adhesion molecules are believed to mediate initial inductive interactions, stabilize connections, and function as nucleation sites for signaling events that promote synapse development and regulate synaptic activity.

Synaptic cell adhesion.
Chemical synapses are asymmetric intercellular junctions that mediate synaptic transmission. Synaptic junctions are organized by trans-synaptic cell adhesion molecules bridging the synaptic cleft. Synaptic cell adhesion molecules not only connect pre- and postsynaptic compartments, but also mediate trans-synaptic recognition and signaling processes that are essential for the establishment, spec...
متن کاملSynaptic adhesion molecules and excitatory synaptic transmission
Synaptic adhesion molecules have been extensively studied for their contribution to the regulation of synapse development through trans-synaptic adhesions. However, accumulating evidence increasingly indicates that synaptic adhesion molecules are also involved in the regulation of excitatory synaptic transmission and plasticity, often through direct or close associations with excitatory neurotr...
متن کاملThe adhesion protein IgSF9b is coupled to neuroligin 2 via S-SCAM to promote inhibitory synapse development
Synaptic adhesion molecules regulate diverse aspects of synapse formation and maintenance. Many known synaptic adhesion molecules localize at excitatory synapses, whereas relatively little is known about inhibitory synaptic adhesion molecules. Here we report that IgSF9b is a novel, brain-specific, homophilic adhesion molecule that is strongly expressed in GABAergic interneurons. IgSF9b was pref...

متن کاملSelected SALM (synaptic adhesion-like molecule) family proteins regulate synapse formation.
Synaptic cell adhesion molecules regulate various steps of synapse formation. Despite the great diversity of neuronal synapses, relatively few adhesion molecules with synaptogenic activity have been identified. Synaptic adhesion-like molecules (SALMs) are members of a family of cell adhesion molecules known to regulate neurite outgrowth and synapse maturation; however, the role of SALMs in syna...
متن کاملHigher-order architecture of cell adhesion mediated by polymorphic synaptic adhesion molecules neurexin and neuroligin.
Polymorphic adhesion molecules neurexin and neuroligin (NL) mediate asymmetric trans-synaptic adhesion, which is crucial for synapse development and function. It is not known whether or how individual synapse function is controlled by the interactions between variants and isoforms of these molecules with differing ectodomain regions. At a physiological concentration of Ca(2+), the ectodomain co...
